Ib Andersen
Ib Andersen (1907-1969) was a Danish illustrator, lithographic artist and architect. He is best known as a cartoonist for Politiken's Magasinet from 1927 and into the early 60s. But Ib Andersen's production is far more inclusive than this, as he also unfolded in visual art, using graphics and architecture. Breakthrough as a poster-illustrator came with the poster for the British Exhibition in 1932, and ran in the years up to a total production of around 25 posters.
From architecture to Tivoli
Ib Andersen's posters are marked by a fascination of typography and architecture and how they can play together in the image and construct new compositions. Especially the earlier works are inspired by the French poster icon AM Cassandre and his cubist and dynamic visual constructions. This surface cultivation changed however over the years for a more atmospheric or romanticized style, which among other things is seen in the famous Tivoli poster from 1943 (reprinted 1952).
